Francis A. West

Mr. Francis A. West, 89, of Mayfield passed away August 10, 2014, following a brief illness. He was born February 9, 1925, in Batchellerville, son of the late Arthur and Thelma Morrison West. Mr. West was educated in Mayfield Schools and proud of his hard work ethic and life accomplishments. Considered a “jack of all trades” by many family and friends, Francis was especially proud of building his home and the various masonry jobs he did all his life. He is a former member and elder of the Mayfield Presbyterian Church. An Army veteran, Francis proudly served his country in the European theater during World War II, and also in Korea.

For many years, Francis was employed in the maintenance department of area textile businesses, including Lee Dye, Rebel and Adirondack Companies. More recently, he was employed in the steam turbine department, building 273 at General Electric Co. in Schenectady, where he was responsible for the “bucket cutting” process, an intricate and detailed step in steam turbines.

Francis and his wife Lois traveled extensively around the entire country by automobile, enjoying the many wonders and sights our country has to offer. He will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his son, Stephen F. West of Mayfield; two grandchildren, Kurt West and Kasey West; a great-grandson, Cameron West; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Stewert West; and a brother, Ronald West.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. at the Mayfield Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bonnie Orth officiating. There will be no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the American Red Cross, 33 Everett Road, Albany, New York 12205. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Please visit the family online guestbook at
