Presentation, signing planned by author

FONDA – Author Tom Calarco will speak and sign copies of his book “The Search for the Underground Railroad in Upstate New York” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the old courthouse, 9 Park St.

In the book, Calarco recounts his experiences compiling evidence to give credence to the underground railroad’s history in upstate New York, a news release said. As the Civil War loomed and politicians from the North and South debated the fate of slavery, brave New Yorkers risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape bondage.

After the presentation, he will sell and autograph copies.

For more information, call Montgomery County Historian Kelly Farquhar at 853-8186.

Calarco also will sign books from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at The Book Hound, 16 E. Main St., Amsterdam, and at the Walter Elwood Museum at 3 p.m. today.
