Mohawks to play for PGCBL title

LITTLE FALLS – For the fourth time in the four-year existence of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, the Amsterdam Mohawks will play for the league championship.

The Mohawks completed a two-game sweep of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in the East Division Championship Series, posting a 7-1 win at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Saturday.

Amsterdam won the first game Friday at Shuttleworth Park, 8-7.

The Mohawks scored twice in the third and twice in the fourth innings to take control of the game.

Alex DeBellis had two doubles and two RBIs for the Mohawks, while Josh Gardiner was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Marcus Carson and JaVon Shelby each had two hits for Amsterdam, while Blake Logan added a double.

Colin Hawk was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Mohawk Valley.

Connor Johnstown earned the win on the mound for the Mohawks, allowing four hits, striking out four and walking one in seven innings of work.

Amsterdam will face either Elmira or Newark in the PGCBL Championship Series, beginning Tuesday. The Mohawks will host the first game at 6:35 p.m.

Elmira won the opening game of the West Division Championship Series on Saturday, 8-3. The Pioneers can earn a spot in the championship series with a win at home today.
