FMRRC hosts 31st annual Mule Haul road race

FORT HUNTER – The Fulmont Roadrunners Club’s 31st annual Mule Haul road race took place on June 15.

Some 350 runners and their families took part in the event. Along with the races for the adults and fun runs for the kids, all got to enjoy a free Father’s Day picnic compliments of the Roadrunners.

There were 150 competitors in the adult race, won for the second year in a row by Thomas McClellan, 18, of Gloversville. It took him 23:53 seconds to circle the five-mile loop, which includes a couple of miles on the towpath once traveled by mules hauling barges along the Erie Canal.

Second and third for the men were taken by Austin Becker, 19, and Gregory Bogdan, 18, both of Broadalbin. Their times were 27:10 and 29:06, respectively.

In the women’s competition, first-place honors went to Tantra O’Neil, 31, of Fultonville, who finished in 34:39. Moriah Humiston, 14, of Rome, took second for the women with a time of 35:24 and Jane Burroughs, 25, of Hagaman was third in 35:53.

In honor of Father’s Day, there also was a competition to determine the fastest father-daughter and father-son teams. The winner in the father-daughter category was the team of Moriah and Todd Humiston. Second went to Team Burroughs, Jane and Jim, and Brittany and Chris Douglass took third.

Sam Dikeman Jr. and Sr. were the fastest father-son team, followed by Timothy Dufresne Jr. and Sr., and John and Jim Moore.

And there was competition in 14 age groups for both the men and women runners. The youngest group, for runners up to 14 years of age, was won by Luka Nikollaj, 13, of Mayfield for the boys and Ada Silverberg, 12, of Niskayuna for the girls. At the other extreme was the 75-79 age group, won by Kermit Cadrette, 76, or Rome. There were no women competitors in this age group.

Following the competitive races were several kids runs at distances ranging from 100 yards to about a mile. The dozens of smiling youngsters who took part in these runs all received first-place medals along with goodie bags just for signing up.

Dern Scholarship

Highlights of the post-race festivities included the naming of the Fulmont Roadrunners’ annual Dern Memorial Scholarships for college-committed seniors who competed in long-distance running during their high school years.

Winners of this year’s $500 awards were Ilenis Quinones and Caitlyn Adamchick, both of Amsterdam High School. The scholarship recipients both will be studying nursing, Quinones at Russell Sage College, and Adamchick at Sacred Heart University, and both will be running in college. They bring to $20,050 the amount given out in the 19-year history of the scholarship program.

Hall of Fame

The induction of a new member into the Fulmont Roadrunners Hall of Fame also took place during the post-race festivities. The new inductee is Jim Moore, a distinguished club member and extraordinary runner, whose achievements in road racing include a sub-three-hour marathon.

Moore was club president for three years and during his 20-year club membership has volunteered at numerous club races and directed five successful Mule Hauls. For more than a dozen years he also served as Mileage Challenge coordinator and race calendar editor, and he was responsible for first bringing computerized results to the races with which the club was involved.

Moore is the seventh to be inducted into Fulmont Roadrunners’ Hall of Fame. He joins current members Darryl Ferguson, Larry Vickers, Joe Rzeznik, C.W. Austin, Jim Louison, and Joyce Poulin.
