District working out P.E. policy

FONDA – High school students at Fonda-Fultonville Central School District may have a new option for getting their physical education credit starting next year.

At a recent Board of Education meeting, the board discussed a new independent study policy the district is looking to put in place.

The new policy would allow students to take physical education as a pass or fail while participating in an approved physical education program outside of regular gym class.

Students could begin taking the program their sophomore year.

Interim Superintendent Raymond Colucciello said several students expressed interest in independent study, but the district did not have a policy in place for it.

According to the policy draft, the independent study entails an agreement between the student, parent/guardian/caregiver, a certificated employee and any other people who give assistance to the student. A district administrator will determine that the prospective independent study student understands and is prepared to meet the district’s requirements for independent study.

The policy draft states only high school students who have passed the state learning standards by the end of ninth grade and received physical education credit with a grade of 85 percent or better qualify to do independent study.

The policy states students also need an overall grade-point average of 85 percent or better to qualify, and students who are taking additional rigorous classes may be considered for Independent Study Physical Education beginning in their 10th grade year.

Students taking independent physical education may not have early dismissal or late arrival during independent study.

According to the state Education Department, students in grades seven through 12 are required to participate in physical education at least two times per week. Students in grades nine through 12 are required to earn two units of credit in physical education to receive a diploma.

The board will review the policy again during its next regular meeting.
