Lawmaker forms ‘student cabinet’

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, D-Rotterdam, announced he is forming a “student cabinet” to get input from local students on the statewide education policies and issues impacting them.

“Our community’s youth deserve a voice, especially when it comes to making decisions and forming policy that directly affects them,” Santabarbara said in a news release. “They are the future of this state and country; we should give them the opportunity to join the conversation.”

In creating the student cabinet, Santabarbara hopes to empower local students by engaging them in topics that matter to them, allowing them to have a meaningful stake in their own futures, according to the news release.

Discussion will center on a variety of issues, including school funding, student loans and Common Core.

Applications for the student cabinet are available at tinyurl.com/StudentCabinet. Submissions are due by Sept. 15 and can be mailed to 433 State St., Center City, Schenectady, NY 12305.

Interested candidates can also contact Santabarbara’s office at 382-2941 for more information.

The student cabinet will meet at the GE Theatre at Proctors at 432 State St., Schenectady, on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon.
