More opportunities to kill bears: DEC

Black bear hunting opportunities have expanded this year as a result of regulation changes adopted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, a news release said.

The changes include having a uniform start date – Sept. 13 – for bowhunting and early firearms bear season in the Northern Zone, which includes northern Fulton County and Hamilton County.

Another change establishes bear hunting seasons in all of upstate New York -all counties north of New York City – including in the Southern Zone for bear hunting. The Southern Zone includes southern Fulton County and Montgomery County.

The line separating the Northern and Southern zones follows Route 29 through Fulton County, according to information from the DEC.

DEC deemed the changes necessary to limit population growth and range expansion by black bears in the state, the release said.
