Man hurt self, had knife: police

GLOVERSVILLE – City police said a man was taken into custody after he showed a knife at Price Chopper early Monday morning.

Police said the man was displaying a knife at the store around 3:30 a.m.; it appeared the man had harmed himself.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken into custody after a brief standoff.

Capt. John Sira said the man was both inside and outside of the store during the incident.

The man was later detained for a mental health law violation and was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted wounds and apparent psychiatric condition, according to a news release.

The investigation remains open and further charges are pending.

The state police and Johnstown Police assisted city police with the incident.

A manager at the Price Chopper on North Main Street on Monday said she was “not at liberty” to discuss the incident.

The store was closed Monday until around 5 p.m.

Price Chopper’s public relations department did not return a phone call seeking comment this morning.
