Johnstown OKs timber contract

JOHNSTOWN – The Common Council recently authorized the city Water Board to enter into a $26,952 contract with a Maine firm for the timbering of trees at Cork Center Reservoir the next three years.

Sealed bids for the timbering project were opened May 21 by the city Water Department and that highest bid was received from Prentiss & Carlisle Management Co. of Bangor. The company was given a $26,952 contract to timber at the reservoir from this summer to March 30, 2016.

The resolution passed by the council at City Hall indicated that F&W Forestry Services Inc. – the Water Board’s timber consultant – recommended city officials accept the Prentiss & Carlisle offer. The resolution says Prentiss & Carlisle has agreed to cut and remove 1,083 trees marked with blue and orange paint at Cork Center Reservoir.

In other action last week by the council:

The council rejected a $100 offer from Greg and Kim LaMere to purchase vacant, city-owned property at 208 1/2 S. Market St. City Engineer Chandra Cotter said the city had to offer it once for public bid, but can now put the property on its website for sale. The sale was rejected because the city feels it can make more money than the bid offer, she said.

City Treasurer Michael Gifford said the city will also have “some additional property” for sale on the city website.

The council accepted a $3,000 private offer from Henry Torres to purchase city-owned property at 311 W. State St. The city advertised for sealed written bids for the property as part of foreclosure proceedings on May 30, but no bids were received.

Mayor Michael Julius was authorized to execute a contract between the city and Joseph E. Mastrianni Inc. of Schenectady for administration of the city’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program and Family Self-Sufficiency Program. The contract, for which the city didn’t release monetary details, is retroactive to July 1 and runs through July 1, 2017.

The council endorsed these three 2014 downtown events for coverage under the city’s liability insurance policy: Motorcycle Show – Aug. 14, rain date Aug. 21; Harvest Festival/Halloween Parade – Oct. 25; Colonial Stroll – Dec. 5.
