Blatch throws no-hitter; Mohawks sweep Brewers
UTICA -Powered by Taylor Blatch’s no-hit pitching performance in the opening game, the Amsterdam Mohawks swept a doubleheader from the Utica Brewers 7-0 and 16-0 Sunday at Murnane Field.
Blatch struck out five and walked four in his seven-inning no-hitter. The no-hitter is only the second one thrown in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball history. The first no-hitter was thrown by Jesse Burratt of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs against the Albany Dutchmen on July 11, 2012.
Blatch’s no-hitter was not without a close call. In the bottom of the second, when the Brewers put runners on second and third via two walks and a wild pitch. Blatch got successive ground outs to escape the threat.
In the second game, Amsterdam exploded for 10 runs in the top of the third inning en route to the 16-0 shutout.
Kevin Guthrie went the distance for the Mohawks, allowing three hits and striking out 11.
Amsterdam (34-10) has clinched the PGCBL East Division title and will play a doubleheader tonight against the Adirondack Trail Blazers at Shuttleworth Park. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
