Mohawks sweep pair from DiamondDawgs

AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam Mohawks extended the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League East Division lead to seven games by sweeping a double-header from second-place Mohawk Valley Saturday night at Shuttleworth Park.

Amsterdam (28-8) connected for five hits in its 4-2 opening game victory and rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the nightcap, 4-2.

In the opening game Amsterdam’s John Razzino homered over the right-field fence in the second inning to give Amsterdam an early lead.

The DiamondDawgs put two runs on the board in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead before Amsterdam tied the game up After Josh Gardiner walked and later came around to score on thomas Kain’s double.

The Mohawks came up with the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth when Razzino singled and stole second. Kain followed with a walk. Razzino came around to score on Joe Purritano’s sacrifice fly and Kain gave amsterdam an insurance run when he crossed the plate on Alex DeBellis’ double.

In the second game, Mohawk Valley got off to a quick start at Collin Hawk homered and Gus Craig walked and later scored on Jayson Sullivan’s double to left.

The Mohawks rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Marcus Carson led off with a single and Gardiner doubled to left before Carson scored on a ground out by Razzino. Brendan Tracy doubled to score Gardiner and Kain blasted a two-run home run to left to give Amsterdam a 4-2 victory.

The Mohawks will travel to face Glens Falls tonight and Mohawk Valley on Monday before returning home Wednesday to play Utica.
