Gloversville man faces rape charge

GLOVERSVILLE – A convicted sex offender confronted by the parents of a 14-year-old girl Wednesday was charged by city police with rape.

Police on Thursday reported the arrest of James Becker, 28, of 15 Allen St. Becker, a level two sex offender, was charged with felony second-degree rape. Police said more charges are pending.

About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said, an officer encountered a disturbance involving several people, including juveniles, in the area of Bleecker and Church streets. While investigating the incident, it was brought to the officer’s attention that Becker had been holding hands with a 14-year-old girl while walking near the East Fulton Street basketball court, police said.

Police said members of the girl’s family were present. Knowing Becker was a sex offender, police said they confronted him, which led to a minor physical altercation. Further investigation led to information that Becker had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old, police said.

Becker was arraigned in City Court before Judge Traci DiMezza and sent to the Fulton County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond to face further court action.
