Funds set to aid historic schoolhouse

NELLISTON – Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced Sunday that he secured much needed restoration funds for an historic schoolhouse in Montgomery County.

The Nelliston School, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, has been waiting for years to receive state funding to perform necessary upkeep, a news release said. Funding was trapped in limbo until Santabarbara pushed the state to authorize the release of $10,000, the release said.

“Restoring the Nelliston School has been a priority for this village for many years,” said village Mayor Russell Vance in the release.

The funding can be used to update the plumbing and heating in the building. Money for the school was initially authorized in 2007, but technical errors prohibited the release of the money, the release said.
