Several Mohawks named East all-stars

ELMIRA – The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announced the rosters for the 2014 PGCBL All-Star Game on Tuesday.

The Amsterdam Mohawks had 10 players selected for the East Division all-star team.

Pitchers E.J. Ashworth, Ryan Clark, Thomas Hackimer and Taylor Blatch were named all-stars for the Mohawks, along with Josh Gardiner, JaVon Shelby, Marcus Carson, John Razzino and Jonathan Pryor. Catcher Blake Logan also was named to the all-star team for Amsterdam.

In addition, Amsterdam Mohawks coach Keith Griffin, the 2012 PGCBL Coach of the Year, will lead the East squad.

The 2014 PGCBL All Star Game is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at Dunn Field in Elmira.

“More than two dozen of the all-stars in our two previous games have been drafted by MLB or are now playing professionally,” PGCBL President Jeff Kunion said in a news release. “The All-Star Game program gives our fans an opportunity to watch our top players go through their workouts for pro scouts. The game, the home run derby and the scout day activities makes this a special event for all in attendance.”

The all-star event will kick off with scout day activities at 4 p.m. when scouts from MLB teams evaluate the talent level of the PGCBL’s top players. The scout drills will be followed by a home run derby. Amsterdam’s Jake Salpietro will compete in the home run derby.

The PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game USA, the largest independent scouting service in the country, the release said.

This year, more than than 1,250 professional players have either worn the uniform of a PGCBL team or participated in a Perfect Game USA event, according to the release.
