National champ

Sheldon Howard, a St. Johnsville resident and tae kwon do competitor, recently competed in the AAU National Tae Kwon Do Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on July 4 and 5. Howard took gold in forms and silver in sparring. Howard, who also is a fifth-degree black belt in karate, started tae kwon do about a year ago to supplement his karate training. Howard won the AAU Adirondack regionals in February to qualify him for nationals as a member of the New York team. Howard is the wellness and group exercise director at the Fulton County YMCA.
