Canal Days festival planned at crossing

FORT HUNTER – On July 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Schoharie Crossing will host Canal Days, an annual festival with music, games and food.

Performers will include The Nellies, Sara Milonovich, Cosby Gibson and Tom Staudle, as well as magician Jim Snack and Pip Squeaks the Clown. The Utica Zoo Mobile also will be at the event.

The event will include disc golf. The Schenectady Disc Golf Club will sponsor a beginner clinic and a five-hole course on the site, a news release said.

Tri County Old Time Power will hold an antique engines and tractor show, which will showcase old engines and farm equipment.

In the Enders House, there will be a student art and expression exhibit on the theme of the Erie Canal.

Local elementary school students will have an opportunity to show off their creativity, the release said.

Many community organizations will participate. Among them are the Girl Scouts; the Schenectady Winter Sports Club; the Environmental Clearing House of Schenectady; Forever Home Greyhound Adoption; Easy Street Horse Rescue; Run By Dogs, which will be bringing sled dogs; the Louis Berger Group, which is responsible for the archaeology for the Amsterdam Bridge project; and the Mohawk River Basin Program.

The Fort Hunter Fire Department will host rides, craft vendors and refreshments.

There will be a Price Chopper- sponsored bounce house July 12 as well as a chicken barbecue sponsored by the Friends of Schoharie Crossing, the release said.

Sammy’s Country Wagon will sell refreshments July 13.

The event is the result of many sponsors, including the Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor, Montgomery County Local Tourism Grant Program, the Natural Heritage Trust, the Friends of Schoharie Crossing, Alpin Haus, Girard’s and Parillo’s Armory Grill.
