4th on 3rd celebration postponed due to storm

FORT PLAIN – Crowds showed up at the 27th annual 4th on the 3rd celebration Thursday at Wiles Park, but severe storms later in the day closed the event early.

Clouds of smoke from barbecue chicken collided with the smell of burgers, fries and fresh-cut grass as the celebration began around 2 p.m. However, storms crossing Montgomery County forced the event to end around 4:30 p.m.

Jim Katovitch, general chairman of the celebration committee, said Thursday evening no rain date has been set for the celebration.

“It is still to be determined,” Katovitch said.

The event’s fireworks were also canceled.

“There was no way we can guarantee a clear hour and a half of weather,” Katovitch said Thursday night.

While the event was going earlier in the day, crowds were turning out. Local organizations such as the Fort Plain Fire Department, the Fort Plain High School Class of 2018, Berkshire Farms and others had booths set up, selling candy, soda, water and other items.

People watched Civil War re-enactors load and fire muskets. People also watched the re-creation of a small Civil War camp, complete with a doctor.

There was live music by Mickey Bouslet and Louis Sierra.
