Community gets behind Relay for Life

The Fulton Montgomery County Relay for Life was held June 6 at Park Terrace Elementary School.

As chair of the event, I just wanted to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the community for its fundraising efforts.

Fifty-eight teams and close to 500 participants came together for an all-night fundraiser to raise $94,000 for cancer research. Fifty-eight teams in our community sold raffle tickets, held bake sales, car washes, chicken dinners and the list goes on. Thank you for supporting all of these efforts. The event website may not reflect this total, yet. It’s a very thorough process, but have patience, it will soon.

Survivors were led around the track by members of the Gloversville Fire Department. Our national anthem was sung by Gloversville High School student Nia Persons. Jackie Gardner shared her survivor story, and sisters, Amanda and Emily Gabeler shared their family’s struggle with this disease in losing their father, Jim, to cancer.

This event could not be possible without our sponsors: the Gloversville Enlarged School District, for allowing us to host the event on its property as well as all of our committee and team captain meetings, Steet Toyota, NYOH and Nathan Littauer Hospital.

A special thank you to the DJ, Party Toons, Christopher Putman and his family, for volunteering their time for DJ services all night long. Thank you to The Leader-Herald for covering the event and for helping us spread the word on the event itself and the various fundraisers.

And last but certainly not least, Kris Revelle, our American Cancer Society staff partner, and the wonderful committee of volunteers from our area that I’m fortunate to work with and call friends. The committee gives its time and talents for months prior to the event itself.

If you don’t know what Relay is, I encourage you to visit, and if you are interested in becoming a committee member, please send Kristine Revelle an e-mail – – or call her at 220-6942 and she can put you in touch with me or answer any of your questions herself.

We hope to see you at Relay 2015. In the meantime, celebrate, remember and fight back.
