OESJ students win essay contest
OPPENHEIM – The Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge on June 6 recognized four Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville students for their submissions in the Elks Americanism Essay Contest.
According to a news release, the Americanism Essay Contest, held annually by the Elks to promote patriotism among young people, this year asked students to submit essays explaining the answer to the question, “What does Veterans Day mean to me?” The contest was open to students in grades five through eight.
This year’s winners were OESJ Elementary School fifth-graders Manny Root and Jesse Watson. Root placed first in Division 1 (fifth and sixth grade) and Watson received the second place honor. Winners in Division II (seventh and eighth grade) were OESJ Middle School seventh-graders Emma Hart and Mariah Hurteau. Hurteau earned the first-place award and Hart earned second place.
