B-P’s Coveney wins state championship

CICERO – Broadalbin-Perth’s Jake Coveney won the Division 2 pentathlon state championship Saturday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet.

He finished the first day of the championship meet Friday in third place in the Division 2 pentathlon standings.

On Saturday, Coveney launched himself for a 20-00.5-foot long jump to take the lead and kicked in a 4:31.99 1,500-meter run to win the Division 2 state championship.

Gloversville’s Chanel Thomas entered Saturday’s portion of the Division 1 girls pentathlon in sixth but delivered a school-record long jump of 17-08 to win that leg of the pentathlon and turned in a time of 2:43.98 in the 800-meter run to finish third in the Division 1 girls pentathlon competition at the state championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
