Daniel D. Phelan
Daniel D. Phelan, 92, of Clifton Park died suddenly on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Saratoga Hospital. He was born in Grand View-on-the-Hudson in New York on March 31, 1922, and was the son of the late John and Laura Phelan. He was an Army Air Force veteran, having served during World War II in the European theater with the Army Corps of Engineers. Following the war, Dan went to work for the former Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, retiring as department head of packaging after 42 years of service. Dan was a founding member of the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps. and Rescue Squad. He was a communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park.
Dan is the beloved husband of the late Eleanor T. Phelan, who died March 31, 2014. The couple was married in Oradell, New Jersey on August 28, 1948. He was the devoted father of Glenda K. (Sal) Corcione, Daniel W. (Lorraine) Phelan and Susan E. (Al) Monroe; cherished grandfather of Daniel, Meghan, Joseph, Craig, Holli and Erica; great-grandfather of Emily, Sal, Andy, and Chloe; brother of Richard Phelan of Sun City Center, FL, and Gerard (Caroline) Phelan of Stony Point, NY, and the late Willie, Jack, Charlie, Eddie, Daisy, Loretta, Beatrice; and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
As accomplished as Dan was professionally, his greatest pride was in his family and his woodworking. Dan was well-known throughout Peck Lake for the many docks he designed and built, and for the restoration of their one-room 1857 schoolhouse, currently being showcased as a museum for young schoolchildren. He and his brothers built and renovated homes and summer camps. He enjoyed making things for his children and grandchildren such as wooden toys, picture frames, dollhouses, shelving units, and wooden butlers. In addition, he designed, constructed and finished basements; cut and planed hardwood trees in preparation for making the furniture he created. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, bowling (for which he received many first place trophies) and fishing.
Dan will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but now has joined his soulmate in heaven and is at peace.
