Taylor named top male athlete
JOHNSTOWN – It took a while before Andre Taylor knew the athlete they were talking about was him.
However, when he did, the Broadalbin-Perth High School senior was all smiles as he was announced as the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce Male Athlete of the Year at the annual sports awards banquet Wednesday night at the Holiday Inn.
“When they said two times leading the varsity team to finals, that’s when I knew it was me,” Taylor said. “I kind of thought my cousin Asa [Barnhill of Gloversville] was going to win it, but I am happy it was me; it is a great honor.”
Taylor is an accomplished athlete in two sports, football and basketball; he was a key element in both teams reaching the Section II championship games.
In football, Taylor was named to the first team, Class B Western Division All-Stars on both offense and defense and was named to the first team all-area Recorder team.
In basketball, he was selected to the Foothills Council first team. He was a member of the Section II Class B All-Tournament Team, New York State 11th team in Class B; and won a Capital Region Scholar-Athlete Award. Taylor was the Patriots’ team MVP, leading the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game, assists with 3.6 per game and steals with 1.7 per game.
During the Section II postseason tournament, Taylor scored 31 points in Broadalbin-Perth’s first-round win over Schuylerville and a career high of 35 points against Hudson in the quarterfinals.
Taylor plans to play football at Buffalo State in the fall with a goal of becoming a veterinarian.
“I am hopefully going to play football at Buffalo State and maybe basketball, but I am not sure about that yet,” he said. “They want me to play offense, but I am willing to play just about any position but center and quarterback.”
