Man faces trial for alleged assault

JOHNSTOWN – A town of Mayfield man whose wife’s dead body was found in June 2012 in a remote section of Mayfield is on trial this week in Fulton County Court for two counts, including one for allegedly assaulting her.

Brent S. Alling Sr., 43, of 127 Delaney Road, faces misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated and third-degree assault before Judge Richard C. Giardino. He was indicted by a county grand jury in July. He faces a year in jail per count if convicted.

Jury selection was conducted Monday and opening statements were expected this morning from Assistant District Attorney Kelli McCoski and defense attorney Robert Abdella of Gloversville.

Alling was charged June 5 by state police with DWI. Following indictment, District Attorney Louise Sira said Alling was also accused in the assault count of biting his now-deceased wife – 54-year-old Kathryn Jackson Alling – on the left forearm. Mrs. Alling’s naked, bruised body was found the morning of June 4, 2012, on Tyrrell Road by town employees collecting garbage.

Sira said the medical examiner was not able to determine the cause of death. She said a 2013 grand jury reviewed allegations Alling improperly placed his wife’s body on Tyrrell Road, but chose not to indict him.
