Fonda competes at state golf tourney

ITHACA – Gloversville senior Josh Fonda finished tied for 47th at the New York State Public High School Golf Championships, which were played at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.

Fonda posted an 86 in Sunday’s first round to finish the first day tied for 62nd. In Monday’s final round, Fonda posted an 80 to finish with a two-day total of 166, good for second among Section II competitors.

It was the second straight trip to the state tournament for Fonda, who finished tied for 59th with a total of 170 last year.

Jack Gianniny won with a two-round total of 142. Gianniny posted a 2-over par 73 in the first round Sunday and finished with a 2-under par round of 69 on Monday to win the title. Shenendehowa’s Kyle Mathews, who finished first at the Section II state qualifier, finished second with a two-round total of 145.

Other Section II competitors included Saratoga Springs’ Chris Thompson (55th, 168), Glens Falls’ Alex Gibson (61st, 169), Shaker’s Tanner Donovan (68th, 171), Hudson Falls’ Wyatt Gorham (71st, 172), Saratoga Springs’ Dan Shepard (80th, 176), Shaker’s Hunter Donovan (82nd, 177) and Bethlehem’s Matt Mastrianni (84th, 179).

Section I won the team title with a total of 1,068, Section V was second with 1,078 and Section VIII was third with 1,086.

Section II was ninth with a total of 1,161.
