Varin, Warner claim Glen Ridge feature wins
FULTONVILLE – Defending modified track champion Bobby Varin, Rocky Warner (602 sportsman), Nick Stone (pro stock), Darryl Ruggles (CRSA sprints), Pete Vila (4-cylinder) and Rob Casti (vintage) all took home feature victories Sunday at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park.
Promoter Mike Sowle also announced some enhancements to the 602 sportsman division purse structure, as starting Sunday, the feature winner will now receive $1,000 for an A-Main event feature win for the remainder of the 2014 racing season. There also will be a B-Main event held every week, where the winner will receive $250 or a spot in the A-Main event. All other participants in the B-Main will be paid $50.
“We are continuing our improvements to the facility on a weekly basis,” Sowle said in a news release. “Pete Demitraszek has the track in great condition and we have a new lap counter in place and a new PA system, which will be installed for next week’s racing program. The Vintage cars will race at the Ridge on the first and third Sunday of every month, and the Xcel 600 modifieds will become a weekly division as well.
“We also have bonuses set up for all divisions; for any three wins in a season you get a set of tires and for any five wins in a season you get a barrel of fuel. We hope to gain some cars in the 602 sportsman class with the purse increase, and we will continue to strive to have the racing programs completed by 9 p.m. or as close to that as possible on a weekly basis.”
In the modified feature, Varin claimed his second consecutive win, followed by Marc Johnson, Kenny Tremont, Craig Hanson and Elmo Reckner.
In the sportsman class, Warner cruised to his second consecutive win, followed by Derrick McGrew, Mark Mortensen, Shea Montgomery and Jon Miller.
In the pro stock feature, Chuck Dumblewski and Stone were side by side for the lead over the final three laps of the event, with Stone just nipping Dumblewski at the line for the win. Robbie Speed, Gus Hollner and Randy Cosselman completed the top five in the event.
With his third consecutive win in the division, Stone also collected the bonus of a set of tires for his pro stock racer.
Pete Vila led every lap in the 10-lap 4-cylinder feature event for his second consecutive win over Shane Playford, Keith Tesiero Sr., Keith Tesiero Jr., Wayne Russell Jr. and P.J. Bleau.
Mike Gray led lap one of the 10-lap vintage feature event until Rob Casti took over the lead on a lap two restart after a caution. Casti led the remaining laps and went on for the win over Frank Blanchard, Gray, Charlie Schofield, Darryl Hulbert, Tim Adair and Don Greco.
Darryl Ruggles led all 20-laps of the CRSA sprint car feature event and was followed to the checkered flag by Tyler Chartrand, Cory Sparks, Matt Tanner and Chad King.
