Put focus on students

My name is Jason Romeyn and I am running for a seat on the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District Board of Education.

A little about myself: I am 35 years old and have three children currently enrolled in OESJ. I have lived in St. Johnsville for most of my life and attended school here until 11th grade. I graduated from Johnstown High School in 1997. I have an extensive background working with at-risk youth as well as physically and developmentally disabled people. I volunteer with the local Little League and enjoy being a part of this wonderful little community where everyone knows you.

I decided to run for a seat on the board because I see the community that I grew up in is in constant turmoil because of the recent actions of our current board. In my opinion, it is personal agendas and hard feelings that are driving some decisions of our current board members and this is not benefiting the people who matter – the students. As everyone who knows me knows, I have been very vocal in the community about some of the board’s decisions. I attend all the board meetings, and if I am going to speak on an issue, I do make sure I have all the facts needed to address the issue at hand. If elected, I promise to continue to do all the necessary research on all topics to make the best informed and educated decision for our district. The only personal agenda I have is to see our district and our students succeed.

The relationship between the board and the community should be open and honest. Too many times this past year, I have seen members of our community disrespected because they questioned the decisions of our board. We currently have a situation where the community is very distrustful of the board. I want to help repair that relationship and bring our two communities together. Our students are getting along great – maybe we need to look to them for guidance and follow their lead.

Let’s not waste another year; we need to refocus and become the school that our community can be proud of.

I ask for and appreciate your vote on Tuesday.

Go Wolves!
