Chase ends in crash in Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN -A high-speed police chase that began in the city of Amsterdam ended today with the suspect’s car crashing into a ditch off East Fulton Street and police arresting him, authorities said.
Various police agencies responded to the scene of the crash just after 1 p.m. A black Honda CRZ occupied by the driver was wedged in a ditch off East Fulton Street, between Myrtel Avenue and the new CVS store in the town of Johnstown.
Police blocked off several streets in that area.
Montgomery County Undersheriff Peter Vroman said the male driver – who was put into the back of a sheriff’s patrol car – took off from Amsterdam. He said one of his deputies noticed the car had several “violations,” including pending vehicle and traffic law violations, and tried to stop the car on Guy Park Avenue.
Vroman said the driver and his male passenger fled the scene north toward Fulton County, ending up in the town of Johnstown. Vroman couldn’t say which route the driver took.
The undersheriff declined to give the name of the driver. He said the driver and his passenger suffered “scratches” in the crash.
“I saw it speeding by my house,” said Chris Rando of North Hollywood Avenue in Gloversville. “They were moving. All I could smell was the brakes.”
In addition to Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies, other law enforcement at the scene included Amsterdam police, state police, Gloversville police, Johnstown police and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department.
