FMCC baseball loses in regional play

SANBORN – Defending Region III champion Niagara County Community College defeated the Fulton-Montgomery Community College baseball team in best-of-three subregional play on Saturday.

Niagara County won the first game, 6-5, and the second game, 7-3, to complete a sweep of the best-of-three series.

Shortstop Greg Ruddy (Troy) had six hits on the day (6-for-9) for FMCC, while first baseman James Waters (Troy) had five hits in the two games. Dennis Buckley (Colonie) pitched the first game for the Raiders, and struck out 14 batters while walking four.

The losses end FMCC’s season and their first trip to regional play in 18 years. The win sends Niagara County (24-4 Region III) to the regional championship tournament in Little Falls this weekend. The other finalists are Herkimer County Community College, Onondaga Community College and Erie Community College

FMCC ends the season with a 17-20 overall record and a 13-11 mark in Region III play.
