HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Gloversville competes at Foothills tournament

GLOVERSVILLE – The Gloversville tennis team turned in a strong showing Wednesday during the Foothills Council Tournament at Queensbury High School.

Sophomore Scotty Bruce and seventh-grader Damian Bruce, who were seeded second, reached the finals of the doubles tournament before losing 8-4 to Scotia-Glenville seniors Adam Ashcroft and Aaron Keegan, who were seeded first.

The Bruce brothers defeated Queensbury’s Connor Conway and James Twyman, 8-3, in the first round. In the semifinals, they topped Queensbury’s Patrick?McMore and Matthew Ricciardelli, 8-2.

Senior Sheldon Billa and Junior Marko Markovic advanced to the doubles semifinals before losing 8-2 to Keegan and Ashcroft. Billa and Markovic topped South?Glens Falls’ Richard Arnold and Andrew Nygard in the first round, 8-3.

Coming up short in their matches were Gloversville’s Nicholas Bruce, Kyle Fonda, Jessica Clet, Sarah Label, Josh Daly and Brian Hugo.

“All the kids performed well today. Some made it farther than others, but all and all a great showing,” Gloversvile coach Mike Bruce said. “The future of Gloversville tennis looks bright.”

Gloversville is scheduled to host Glens Falls today at 4 p.m. at Boulevard Elementary School.

On Tuesday, Gloversville won both ends of its doubleheader at Queensbury.

In the first match, Damian Bruce, Marko Markovic and Sheldon Billa won singles matches for the Huskies, while Josh Daly and Brian Hugo teamed up to win at second doubles.

Nick Ricciardello and Patrick McMore won singles matches for Queensbury (5-3 overall, 5-3 Foothills).

In the second match, Scotty Bruce, Damian Bruce, Markovic and Billa won singles contests for Gloversville (6-2 overall, 6-2 Foothills).

Daly and Hugo added a win at second doubles for the Huskies.

On Monday, Scotia-Glenville won three of five singles matches and both doubles contests on its way to a 5-2 win over Gloversville in a Foothills Council boys tennis match Monday.

Alex Sausville, Aaron Keegan and Colter Carlstedt won singles matches for Scotia-Glenville (11-2 overall, 8-0 Foothills).

Taha Ahmed and Sean O’Connor won at first doubles for the Tartans, while Christopher Dunn and Martin Dearaway won at second doubles.

Scotty Bruce and Markovic won singles matches for Gloversville (4-2 overall, 4-2 Foothills).

Amsterdam falls to Schenectady

SCHENECTADY – The Amsterdam boys tennis team lost both of its matches to Schenectady by scores of 9-0 on Wednesday.

In the first match, Joshua Sagaille, Curtis Farmer, Calvin Cleworth, Misha-El Semper, Billy Avramidis and Nick Schneider won singles matches for Schenectady (10-0 overall, 9-0 Big 10). The Patriots also won the three doubles contests.

In the second match, Schenectady won all six singles contests and all three doubles matches to complete the sweep.

Amsterdam slipped to 0-8 overall and 0-8 in Big 10 play with the losses.
