H.S. Baseball Roundup: Fort Plain tops Mayfield, 8-5

MAYFIELD – Jesse Heroth improved to 5-0 on the season, pitching a seven hitter to lead Fort Plain to an 8-5 win over Mayfield in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game Monday.

Heroth also had a solo home run for the Hilltoppers, who improved to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in WAC play.

Tyler Marsh had three singles and an RBI sacrifice fly for Fort Plain, while Jim May had a double, triple and two RBIs. Drew Fureno and Kiernan Briggs each had two singles for the Hilltoppers.

The win was the 705th career victory for Fort Plain coach Craig Phillips, who tied Ed Nietopski of Bishop Kearney for second on the state’s all-time wins list. Phillips trails only Bob Cecere of Eastchester, who collected his 706th career win Monday.

Jordan VanNostrand had two doubles and a single for Mayfield (3-9 overall, 3-8 WAC), while Ales Colby had two singles. Bobby Gates and Alex Charbonneau added doubles for the Panthers.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Saratoga Catholic swept a doubleheader from Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville. The Saints won the first game, 5-1, and the second game, 2-1.

In the first game, Joe Schmidt improved his personal record to 4-0 and struck out nine for Saratoga Catholic (9-1 overall, 9-0 WAC). Ryan Czarnecki hit a two-run double for the Saints, and Tim Brizzell went 2-for-3.

John Vicciarelli had two singles for Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville (7-5 overall, 6-4 WAC).

In the second game, Owen O’Reilly gave up an unearned run, struck out six and allowed three hits to earn the win on the mound for the Saints.

GALWAY – Galway scored four times in the seventh inning to rally for a WAC win over Canajoharie.

Nathan Schrader had the game-winning hit for the Eagles (5-3 WAC).

QUEENSBURY – Chris Pontiff struck out nine in six innings of work to lead Queenbury to a win over Hudson Falls.

Pontiff improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Joe Marasco and Eric Wettersten each had RBI singles for Queensbury (11-2 overall, 10-0 Foothills), while Brett Rodriguez had two hits.

Hudson Falls slipped to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in Foothills Council play with the loss.

It was the seventh win in eight games for the Rams, who are scheduled to host Christian Brothers Academy today at 4:30 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park in the first game on the new Astroturf infield.
