Area teams earn state awards

A total of 28 area winter sports teams were among those honored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as scholar-athlete team award winners.

To earn the honors, a team needed to achieve an academic average of 90 or greater in classes during the winter sports season.

This year marks the 23rd year the NYSPHSAA has honored teams with the award.

Amsterdam led the way among area schools, with five teams earning winter scholar-athlete team awards.

The Amsterdam girls indoor track team posted a team grade-point average of 92.40, while the boys indoor track team finished with a GPA of 92.01.

The Amsterdam boys swimming (90.97 GPA), girls basketball (90.57) and boys basketball (90.02) teams also were honored.

Broadalbin-Perth, Dolgeville and Fonda-Fultonville all had four of their winter sports teams earn scholar-athlete team awards.

The B-P boys basketball team posted a team GPA of 93.62. The Patriots also were successful on the court, going 16-6 and reaching the Section II Class B championship game.

The Broadalbin-Perth girls basketball team also earned a scholar-athlete team award after posting a team GPA of 96.69. The B-P girls indoor track (94.88 GPA) and boys indoor track (90.17) teams also were honored.

Dolgeville had its girls basketball (94.45), volleyball (91.18), boys basketball (90.89) and wrestling (90.29) teams honored.

The wrestling team also placed second in the Section III Class D Tournament.

Fonda-Fultonville had its boys basketball (91.95), boys indoor track (93.57), girls basketball (93.91) and girls indoor track (93.92) teams honored. The boys indoor track team won the Section II Division IV championship, while the girls indoor track team placed third at the Division IV meet.

Johnstown had three of its winter sports teams earn scholar-athlete team awards.

The Johnstown girls basketball team posted a team GPA of 94.23, the girls skiing team posted a GPA of 93.81 and the boys skiing team recorded a GPA of 90.30.

The Johnstown girls basketball team also reached the finals of the Section II Class B Tournament, finishing the season with a 15-7 overall record.

Mayfield also had three teams honored, as the girls basketball (93.84), girls skiing (94.78) and boys skiing (92.14) teams earned scholar-athlete team awards.

Mayfield’s Mitch Akowicz and Emily Cromie both qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Nordic Skiing Championships.

Also earning scholar-athlete team awards were the Gloversville boys indoor track (90.29), Gloversville girls indoor track (91.31), Wells girls basketball (92.88), Canajoharie-Fort Plain wrestling (92.21) and Fort Plain girls basketball (91.78) teams.
