Local teacher dies in crash
MOHAWK – A local science teacher and mother of five children was killed in a three-car accident at the intersection of Route 67 and Albany Bush Road on Wednesday afternoon.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Doreen Dziedzic-Etzkorn, 58, of Fonda, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Education Services Superintendent Patrick Michel said Dziedzic-Etzkorn was hired by the district in January as a science teacher at the Adirondack Academy.
“She was doing a great job and we’re devastated,” Michel said. “She is going to be deeply missed.”
Authorities said it appeared the Ford Focus operated by Dziedzic-Etzkorn was heading west when it was rear-ended by a Dodge Ram pickup truck operated by Connie Coddington, 53, of Gloversville.
Deputies said this caused Dziedzic-Etzkorn’s vehicle to be pushed into the path of a Honda CRV headed east driven by Gail Waselauskas, 60, of Broadalbin.
Sheriff’s Office investigator Theresa Pingitore said the circumstances leading to Dziedzic-Etzkorn’s vehicle being rear-ended were still unclear this morning.
She said there were no obvious signs of alcohol being a factor.
Coddington authorized a blood test that is being analyzed by state police, officials said.
All three drivers were alone in their vehicles, which have been impounded by the Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.
Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps Operations Manager Mickey Swartz said the ambulance service responded to the call at 4:08 p.m.
GAVAC ambulances transported Coddington to Nathan Littauer Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Swartz said Waselauskas was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam and later taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany.
Authorities said no tickets have been issued at this time.
