Phillips looking for win 700

FORT PLAIN – In 2009, the Schoharie Indians delayed Fort Plain baseball coach Craig Phillips’ celebration of his 600th career coaching victory with a 1-0 win at Schoharie High School.

The Hilltoppers gave their coach the milestone win two days later, April 9, 2009, on their home diamond with a 15-1 win over St. Johnsville.

The Indians find themselves in a chance to be a spoiler again today when they travel to Phillips Field at the Fort Plain Sports Complex.

This time, Phillips, the winningest baseball coach in Section II, enters today’s Western Athletic Conference game with a 699-203 career coaching record and is looking for win 700.

The Hilltoppers have a 3-0 overall record and 2-0 record in the WAC, while Schoharie comes in with a 1-1 league record.

Home-field advantage has been favorable for Phillips when it comes to milestone wins.

He coached the Hilltoppers to an 8-1 win over Cobleskill-Richmondville on May 19, 2004, at the Fort Plain Sports Complex for his 500th career win.

In his 39 years as coach of the Hilltoppers, Phillips has guided the team to 21 league titles, nine Section II championships and the 2007 Class C state championship.

Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
