Maria Whitman, 89, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Northville, New York, died on February 14, 2014, at Tidewell Hospice’s Sarasota House in Sarasota, FL, with her three daughters at her side.
Maria Anelia Whitman was born in Sanok, Poland, on June 24, 1924, the first-born of Stephan Wojtanowski and Katterina Ilque. She was united in marriage to Arnold L. Whitman Jr. in 1945 in Heidelberg, Germany, where he was stationed as an Army staff sergeant at the end of World War II. They were married for 68 eventful and rewarding years.
Maria was a wonderful wife, a very special mother to six loving children, and a talented homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, and caring for her large family. Maria had worked in the glove industry, owned and operated a dress shop in Northville, and worked for General Electric and Northville Central School.
Maria is survived in the United States by her six children, Ruthie (Phil) Kroll of Sarasota, FL, Larry (Sue) Whitman of Northville, NY, Cheryl (Barry) O’Brien of Port Charlotte, FL, John (Yi) Whitman of San Jose, CA, Joanne (Joe) Petroski of Sidney, NY, and Mickey (Joan) Whitman of Red Hook, NY. She is also survived by her twelve loving grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Maria also has sixteen wonderful great-grandchildren. She is also survived in Germany and Ukraine by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Arnold, and his two brothers and two sisters, Maria was preceded in death by her three brothers who were residents of Europe.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Northville Funeral Service Inc., Northville, NY. A burial service will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Northville, NY on Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. A celebration of Maria’s life will be held later.
