Church to reopen after five years

JOHNSTOWN – The New Covenant Community Church will open on Easter for the first time in more than five years.

The event is part of the ongoing renovation project the church began in 2012, a news release said. The congregation had stopped using the sanctuary because it was in disrepair.

Renovations began in fall 2012, and the congregation has been working toward the goal of using the sanctuary for workship since then, the news release said.

“This is an exciting time for the congregation,” the Rev. John Murray, pastor, said in the news release. “We have been working toward this day for almost two years.”

Murray became pastor of the church in August 2013 after serving for 1 1/2 years in an interim capacity.

“We are committed to the improvement of the church and its property as part of our renewal process spiritually, communally and physically,” he said in the news release.
