Wolves stay perfect in WAC baseball

ST. JOHNSVILLE – The Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville Wolves rallied behind a stellar pitching performance by Brad Smith to defeat Berne-Knox-Westerlo 5-3 in Western Athletic Conference baseball action Friday.

Smith struck out 14 batters and allowed four hits to help the Wolves improve to 2-0 in the league.

BKW tied the game at three in the top of the sixth on Trevor Heack’s two RBI triple. Heack scored on a throwing error to tie the game.

Dylan Klock connected for an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth and Devon Battisti followed with an RBI single to give OESJ the winning 5-3 score.

Battisti finished with a double and a single, while Tyler Mayton and Payten Johnson had two singles each.

DUANESBURG – Jordan VanNostrand fired a five hitter, striking out 12 and walking four to help lift Mayfield to the league victory.

He helped his cause at the plate with a pair of singles, while Luke VanNostrand had two singles, two RBI and two runs scored. Colden Glover added two singles and an RBI, while Bobby Gates had a single and two RBI.

Gabe Gentile paced Duanesburg with a double and Pat McGarry added a pair of hits.

Canajoharie 6, Galway 4

CANAJOHARIE – Joe Winsman struck out 12 and walked none to lead the Cougars to the WAC win.

Buck Anderson went 2 for 3 at the plate for Canajoharie with a double and two RBI, while Winsman was 2 for 3 with a single and two RBI.

Sam Uline paced Galway (1-1) going 3 for 4 with a double.

In a WAC contest on Thursday, Schoharie defeated Canajoharie 5-0 behind the one-hit performance on the mound by the Indians’ Connor Brown.

SCOTIA – The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 13-0 lead Friday before rain forced the game to be stopped in the third inning.

The coaches agreed to pick up the game in the third inning on Tuesday.

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville 9, Bern-Knox-Westerlo 2

ST. JOHNSVILLE – OESJ pitcher Leanne Clark struck out 13 and walked two to lead the Lady Wolves to the Western Athletic Conference victory.

Kyleigh Hayner connected for two singles and an RBI,while Sam LaCoppola had two singles and two RBIs for OESJ.

The Lady Wolves came up short Thursday, falling to Richfield Springs 9-5 in a non-league contest.

Sam Mumford had two singles and Meghan Bradt had two singles and two RBIs for OESJ.

GALWAY – Sabrina Williams hit two doubles and a triple to power the Golden Eagles to the WAC victory.

Jessica Freebern had three singles and a double and Felicia Snyder connected for two singles, a triple and two RBIs.

Lauren Balfe led Canajoharie at the plate with a triple and a single, while Brittany Pitonza and Shy Logan contributed two singles apiece.
