Track athlete hurt, taken by helicopter
MAYFIELD – A Galway High School track athlete injured a leg after going over a hurdle Thursday at Mayfield Central School’s athletic field and had to be evacuated from the scene by a medical helicopter.
Mayfield Athletic Director Eileen Rovito said today the boy – whose name she didn’t release – was hurt about 5:30 p.m.
“He fell on landing,” she said. “He went over the hurdle and just kind of collapsed in pain.”
Rovito, who wasn’t at the scene, said the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. She said the athlete may have badly injured a femur and hip, and a decision was made to dispatch a medical helicopter. The health facility he was taken to wasn’t disclosed.
