Three children hurt in bus accident

JOHNSTOWN – Three children were injured but not hospitalized after an accident involving a Gloversville Enlarged School District bus on April 4, the Fulton County sheriff’s deputies reported.

Deputies said the accident occurred at 3:42 p.m. on Route 309, north of West Bush Road.

Deputies said pickup truck driver Travis J. Smullen, 21, of 669 Route 309, Gloversville, was traveling south on Route 309 and coming around a curve before losing control. The truck skidded into the northbound lane and collided with a northbound Gloversville school bus operated by William J. Peek, 63, of 123 Heyday Lane, Mayfield, deputies said.

Peek drove off the road to avoid a head-on collision, deputies said.

There were 13 passengers on the bus and 12 were children. Deputies said three of the children complained of head injuries. The three were Emma Jackson, 10; Jorge Tirse, 11; and McKenzie Ashbey, 7. They were not immediately taken to a hospital.

Smullen was ticketed on charges of imprudent speed, failure to keep right and aggravated unlicensed operation.
