H.S. Baseball Roundup: Mayfield wins opener, 8-0

MIDDLEBURGH – Bobby Gates earned the win on the mound, striking out 14, walking two and allowing three hits for Mayfield in an 8-0 win over Middleburgh in a Western Athletic Conference baseball contest Monday.

Gates also had a double, runs scored and an RBI for the Panthers, while Luke VanNostrand had a single, RBI and two runs scored.

Austin Lair had two singles for Mayfield (1-0 overall, 1-0 WAC), while Matt Messina and Alex Colby each had a run scored and an RBI.

Colden Glover had a double and a run scored for the Panthers, Dylan Lanza had a single and a run scored and Riley Yager had an RBI. Alex Charbonneau added a run scored for Mayfield.

Ryan Putman, Asa Snyder and Mike Weaver each had singles for Middleburgh.

Canajoharie 5, Saratoga Catholic 5

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Canajoharie and Saratoga Catholic played to a draw after eight innings in a game halted by darkness at West Side Rec.

The game is scheduled to resume when the team meet again May 14.

Joe Winsman pitched all seven innings for Canajoharie, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and no walks.

Lucas Sassei, Tony Brock and Dillan Veeder all hit singles in the fifth inning for the Cougars. Jace Fox had a two-run single in the fifth for Canajoharie. Fox also had a double for the Cougars.

Colin Bradley had a two-run single in the seventh for Saratoga Catholic, while Tim Brizzell had a double. Ryan Czarnecki added a seventh-inning single for the Saints.

Czarnecki, Brizzell and Owen O’Reilly went 2-for-4 for Saratoga Catholic, while Bradley was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Zac Cronk finished 2-for-3.
