Food distributor eyes Quandt’s site

AMSTERDAM – A New Jersey-based food distributor is looking at moving into the Quandt’s Foodservice Distributor’s facility.

Driscoll Foods, a part of Metropolitan Foods, Inc., is in the process of purchasing Quandt’s 105 Quist Road facility.

Mike Palazzolo, chief financial officer with Driscoll Foods, said Driscoll Foods and Quandt’s have not finalized the sale.

“We are very excited and are looking at starting a distribution facility in Amsterdam,” he said.

Palazzolo said at full capacity, Driscoll Foods could employ up to 100 individuals in the distribution center.

“That is going to be dependent [on] how fast we add sales,” he said.

Quandt’s recently sold out to US Foods, turning over 2,000 accounts to the nationwide company. The facility was scheduled to stay open through the first quarter of 2014. After that, US Foods would handle distribution from its Albany location.

Palazzolo said the facility in Amsterdam will be Driscoll Foods’ first New York location.

“We saw an opportunity there and thought the marketplace could use an independent distributor,” Palazzolo said.

Currently, Driscoll Foods has one location in northern New Jersey.

Palazzolo said he believes the deal could close by late May or June, and the company would begin operations at the Quist Road facility as soon as possible.

“We are excited to get operating there right away,” Palazzolo said.

Representatives from Quandt’s were unavailable for comment.
