Amsterdam opens season with wins

AMSTERDAM – Defending state 400-meter champion Izaiah Brown of Amsterdam served notice that he is looking to defend his title.

Brown turned in a time of 48.1 in the 400 meters Wednesday in the Rams’ season-opener against Big 10 rivals Schenectady and LaSalle Institute.

The victory was the first of three individual victories for the junior as the Rams swept the dual meet by winning 11 of the 17 events. Amsterdam posted a 108-69 win over LaSalle and a 108-68 win over Schenectady. LaSalle earned a split with an 87-81 win over Schenectady.

He turned in a time of 21.8 to win the 200-meter dash and cleared the bar at 6-04 to win the high jump. Brown teamed with David Graveley, Andrew Druziak and Julian Gallup to pick up the victory in the 1,600-meter relay.

Graveley also won the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.

On the girls side, Brenda Santana, Olivia Lazarou, Cassandra Robataille and McKenna Palczak scored two individual victories apiece for Amsterdam. The Lady Rams finished with a 120-57 win over Schenectady.

Santana won the 100- and 200-meter sprints, while Lazarou won the 1,500- and 800-meter runs. Palczak picked up the wins in the 100-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, and Robataille was victorious in the pole vault and high jump.
