Fonda Speedway releases schedule for 2014 season

ROTTERDAM – Got a Hawaiian shirt?

Wear it to Fonda Speedway on July 5 and get a $2 discount off the $10 general admission price for the night’s regular race program.

Hawaii Night is only one of the many special events Fonda Speedway promoter Matt DeLorenzo has put on the 2014 schedule that was released Friday at the annual Fonda Speedway Car Show at the Rotterdam Square Mall.

The show, featuring more than 50 cars from all divisions plus go-karts and motorcycles, continues today and Sunday during mall hours.

“I was looking for some different things to get people interested in coming back to the track this year,” DeLorenzo said.

The Track of Champions will drop the green flag on its 62nd consecutive racing season with the 40-lap, $4,000-to-win Ice Melt 40 for modifieds. The Pro Stocks also will be on the season-opening racecard in an 25-lap, $800-to-win feature. All division will be offered warm-ups during the program.

The points battle for the track championships begins April 12 and wraps up with the BBL Night of Features on Aug. 16.

The World of Outlaws Late Models return for a second time June 19 along with a $1,000-to-win 602 Sportsman feature. Advanced sale tickets for the event are $25 if purchased before June 19 and $30 at the gate.

The 410 sprint car division is not on the schedule this season, but fans of the winged warriors will have several opportunities to watch the exciting sprint cars.

The CRSA RaceSaver 305 Sprint Car Series takes to the track April 26 and Sept. 13. The ESS Sprinters will be in town May 24 and Sept. 19, plus the Empire Lightning Sprints are scheduled to make appearances June 28 and July 26. New to the track this season are the POWRi Outlaw Midget Series on June 7 and Aug. 2.

Fans also will have the opportunity to watch the races from a unique spot this season – the infield.

“We have a section blocked off by jersey barriers which will be used on ‘Infield Tailgate Nights,'” DeLorenzo said. “I have seen it at other tracks and thought it was interesting. We will have to limit it probably to nothing bigger than a pickup truck and no tents once the cars go on the track.”

Infield Tailgate Nights are scheduled for May 17, May 24, June 19, July 12, Aug. 2, Aug. 16 and Sept. 21.

The 44-lap, $4,444-to-win Lou Lazzaro Memorial race returns May 24. Fans wearing a Lou Lazzaro hat, shirt or jacket will receive $4 off the $14. general admission price for the night. Active Military and Veterans with ID Card will be admitted free for the evenings race program.

Another big change to the race season involves the season-ending weekend.

The event has been extended from a two-day to a three-day event on Sept. 19, 20 and 21.

A three-day general admission pass will be available for $45 and a two-day pass available for Saturday and Sunday for $35.

Friday’s race card includes the ESS Sprints, Street Stocks and four-cylinders as well as practice for the modifieds and 602 Sportsmen.

Saturday features a 50-lap modified feature, the 602 GRIT Series and street stocks, while Sunday’s program welcomes the Super DIRTcar series 100-lap finale as well as the popular Hondo Classic for the Pro Stock division.

A pair of open practice session are included in the schedule on May 14 and July 30. Grandstand admission is free for the events.

General admission for a regular Saturday night show will be $10 for adults and $2. for children. Pit passes with a Fonda license will be $20 and $25 without a license. Racing for the Saturday night programs starts at 7 p.m.
