Several area fall sports teams earn high school scholar-athlete honors

A total of 37 area fall sports teams were among those honored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as scholar-athlete team award winners.

To earn the honors, a team needed to achieve an academic average of 90 or greater in classes during the winter sports season.

This year marks the 23rd year the NYSPHSAA has honored teams with the award.

Amsterdam led the way with nine of its fall teams earning scholar-athlete team awards.

Amsterdam had its girls swimming (95.45 GPA), girls tennis (95.29), boys golf (94.23), girls soccer (93.86), football (92.62), boys cross country (91.49), girls soccer cross country (91.42), boys soccer (90.49) and volleyball (90.15) teams honored.

On the field, the Rams’ football team advanced to the Section II Class A semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Queensbury.

Broadalbin-Perth and Johnstown each had six fall teams earn scholar-athlete team awards.

Johnstown had its girls swimming (93.25), volleyball (93.13), boys soccer (92.96), girls soccer (92.40), field hockey (90.90) and boys golf (90.79) teams honored.

The Johnstown volleyball team won the Section II Class B title and advanced to the state championship match before losing to Owego Free Academy. The Johnstown field hockey team reached the semifinals of the Section II Class B Tournament.

B-P had its girls soccer (97.42), girls cross country (96.92), volleyball (96.58), football (94.71), boys soccer (93.25) and boys cross country (90.17) teams honored.

The B-P girls cross country team won the Section II Class C title, while the volleyball team reached the Class C title match before losing to Voorheesville. The Patriots’ football team advanced to the Class B title game before losing to state runner-up Schalmont, while the boys and girls soccer teams both reached the Class B semifinals.

Fonda-Fultonville had five of its fall teams honored. The girls soccer (95.21), boys cross country (92.93), volleyball (92.84), boys soccer (91.61) and football (90.46) teams all earned scholar-athlete awards for FFCS. The football team reached the Class C semifinals before losing to eventual champion Hoosick Falls.

Gloversville and Mayfield each had two teams honored, along with their combined girls swim team.

The Gloversville volleyball team posted a team GPA of 92.02, while the girls soccer team had a 90.11 GPA. The volleyball team reached the Section II Class B title match before losing in five games to Johnstown.

The Mayfield volleyball team recorded a 92.02 GPA and the girls soccer team had a 92.11 GPA. The volleyball team reached the Class D title match before losing to Waterford-Halfmoon.

The Gloversville-Mayfield girls swim team finished with a 90.89 GPA.

Dolgeville had its football (93.70) and girls soccer (91.57) teams honored.

Also earning fall scholar-athlete team awards were the Canajoharie-Fort Plain boys cross country team (93.23), Fort Plain girls soccer team (92.67), Northville girls soccer team (91.24) and Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville girls soccer team (91.87).

The OESJ girls soccer team won the Section II Class D title, while the Dolgeville football team advanced to the Section III Class D semifinals.
