OESJ closing for aide’s funeral
OPPENHEIM-Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District officials announced classes will be canceled Thursday because of the funeral of a teacher’s aide.
According to news releases from OESJ, tonight’s Board of Education meeting and Thursday’s classes have been canceled to allow students, board members and faculty to attend the funeral of Marie Colorito, a teacher’s aide in the district.
Colorito died late last week from pancreatic cancer, according to OESJ Board of Education member Keith Handy.
“It was very fast and very shocking to our community,” Handy said.
Staff members will report to their schools in the afternoon for staff training.
Students who attend Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery and Herkimer Board of Cooperative Educational Services, and programs in Gloversville, Johnstown, Fort Plain and House of the Good Shepherd will still have classes. Students who attend those programs for half a day will be dismissed for the other half of the day.
Head Start at the D.H. Robbins Elementary School will begin at its normal time and dismiss at 11 a.m.
Tonight’s Board of Education meeting was postponed until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the middle school.
According to Handy, Colorito attended St. Johnsville High School, only a few years behind Handy. She eventually began working at the St. Johnsville Central School District.
While Handy could not remember exactly when she started working, Colorito made a big impression on the district during her time.
“It has been a long time,” Handy said. “She was very important.”
Colorito, 61, was employed as a teacher’s assistant for more than 29 years for the St. Johnsville Central School District, according to her obituary on the website of Vincent A. Enea Funeral Services.
