Three school board terms to expire

JOHNSTOWN – Terms of three of the nine Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education members expire this year and are subject to public election May 20.

The board on Tuesday took action on two items related to the annual school election.

The board gave authorization to the district clerk to post public-election notices.

The three-year terms of board members Anne Cassidy, Angela Clizbe and Brian Miller Sr. expire this year. New terms begin July 1. The action by the board provides for public notification of the district’s annual meeting and election to be conducted May 20. The district encourages members of the public to consider running for the board seats.

The board also accepted the recommendation of Superintendent Robert DeLilli to appoint Democrat Patricia Bender, of 10 Bloomingdale Ave., and Republican Georgianne Chatterton, of 11 Pine Ave., to the district Board of Registration for a one-year term, effective Feb. 13.

In other action, the board approved several personnel items, including the appointment of Jacqueline Papa, a substitute elementary teacher, at $110.40 per day, from Feb. 3 through April 4.

Melinda Kennedy was given a probationary appointment as a special-education teacher through February 2017 at a salary of $44,281 per year.

The board made term appointments of coaching staff with the following stipends: Aaron Mraz, baseball head coach – $3,257; Jonathan Jennings, baseball assistant – $2,399; Mark Ralbovsky, baseball assistant – $2,228; James Rodecker, baseball – unpaid assistant; Scott Petrie, boys lacrosse head coach – $3,257; Scott Murphy, boys lacrosse assistant – $2,399; Denise Benton, girls lacrosse head coach – $3,257; Brittany Tomek, softball head coach – $3,257; Elizabeth Mahon, softball assistant – $2,399; Jessica Merendo, softball assistant – $2,228; Elizabeth Noto, softball unpaid assistant; Allissa LaPorte, track head coach – $3,257; Ryan Baldock, track assistant – $2,399; Melissa Kaszuba, track assistant – $2,228; and Mike Heberer, track assistant – $2,114.

Board members voted 8-0 to approve the Johnstown High School senior class trip to Boston. Students will leave JHS at 8 a.m. May 30 and return at about 10:30 p.m. June 1. About 33 students are signed up to go.

VanDenburgh called the trip “well-planned.”

Board member Kathryn Zajicek said it should be a “great trip.”
