FMCC women advance to title game

SYRACUSE – Kassandra Flowers finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Fulton-Montgomery Community College women’s basketball team to a 73-72 win over Jefferson Community College in the semifinals of the Division III Region III Tournament at Onondaga Community College.

Flowers scored the game-winning basket with 7.2 seconds remaining for the Lady Raiders.

Sherice Gayle scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for FMCC, while Monae Abrams finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Veronica Chea added 11 points for the second-seeded Lady Raiders.

Jasmine Canady scored 21 points to lead Jefferson, while Alyssa Crosby added 10 points. Amanda Roberts added 15 points for the Lady Cannoneers.

FMCC (21-4 overall) will face top-seeded Onondaga in the championship game today at 1 p.m. Onondaga defeated Schenectady County Community College, 88-67, in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Jefferson ended its season with a 20-7 overall record.

On Friday, FMCC posted a 62-50 win over seventh-seeded Finger Lakes Community College.

Abrams led the Lady Raiders with 20 points, while Flowers finished with 14 points. Stephanie Rice and Chea each scored eight points for FMCC.

Ashley Armstrong scored 15 points to lead Finger Lakes (12-14 overall), while Ryenn Smith and Kelly Broderick each finished with 11 points.
