Lapi reaches state semifinals
ALBANY – In his fifth trip to the state tournament, Amsterdam senior Brandon Lapi will make his third trip to the state semifinals.
Lapi advanced to the 138-pound semifinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division I (large-school) tournament Friday at the Times Union Center with a pair of convincing wins.
“It feels good,” Lapi said. “I wrestled hard. It’s a great feeling to be in the semifinals.”
Lapi, a senior, improved to 46-1 on the season and clinched his fourth straight top-six finish at the state tourney.
“This is my third year making it to the semifinals,” Lapi said. “I just went out and wrestled my match in both matches today.”
Dolgeville’s Triston Engle (170 pounds) also competed Friday, advancing to the quarterfinals before losing. However, Engle remains in contention for a podium finish after winning his first wrestleback match.
In his semifinal match, Lapi steadily built a lead before pulling away in the third period, posting a 12-1 win over Baldwinsville’s Kevin Paul of Section III.
“I thought Brandon had a very strong performance today,” Amsterdam coach Ken Benton said. “He was confident and he wrestled under control.”
In his first match of the day, Lapi posted an 11-1 win over Brewster’s Liam Erickson of Section I.
Lapi recorded a takedown in each of the first two periods, taking a 5-0 lead into the third.
In the final period, Lapi scored a pair of takedowns and earned two nearfall points to seal the victory.
“I liked his approach. He was aggressive and controlled the matches,” Benton said. “Brandon limited the points against him. His defense was solid.”
Lapi, the No. 1 seed, will face fifth-seeded Bethpage’s Jake Eibinder of Section VIII in the semifinals today. Eibinder pinned Massena’s Gavin Perrine of Section X in his first-round match and posted a 4-3 decision over Minisink Valley’s Michael Raccioppi of Section IX in the quarterfinals.
In the other semifinal match third-seeded Justin Cooksey of Section VIII’s MacArthur will face Hilton’s Louie Deprez of Section V.
Lapi, who is 262-41 in his career, is looking to become the first Amsterdam state champion since Giuseppi Lanzi won the 152-pound Division I title in 2010.
Engle, a junior, reached the 170-pound quarterfinals in the Division II (small-school) tournament.
After winning his first match, Engle lost 5-4 to Mexico’s Jacob Woolson of Section III in a rematch of the Section III Division II finals. Woolson, the No. 5 seed, also won that match by one point. Engle had won the two regular-season meetings.
Engle, the No. 4 seed, rebounded to post a win over Putnam Valley’s Willie Messinger of Section I in his first wrestleback match. He will face Clarke’s Joe Turono of Section VIII in the consolation quarterfinals today. With a win, Engle will earn a top-six finish in his first trip to the state tourney.
In his opening contest, Engle outlasted North Rose-Wolcott’s Dakota White of Section V, 10-9. Engle, who is 39-3 this season, led 4-3 after one period and 10-8 after two periods in a back-and-forth contest.
Other Section II wrestlers reaching the semifinals in Division I included Saratoga Springs’ Dominic Inzana (120), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Joey Butler (145) and Columbia’s Angelo Kress (160).
In Division II, Section II had 10 wrestlers reach the semifinals. That group included Duanesburg’s Zach Lawrence (99), Hoosick Falls’ Luis Weierbach (120), Albany Academy’s Matt Morris (120), Hadley Luzerne-Lake George’s Jason Hoffman (145), Duanesburg’s Connor Lawrence (160), Hudson Falls’ Geno Brancati (170), Schalmont’s Nick Gallo (182), Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Logan Kunkle (220), Schalmont’s Marcus Ramundo (285) and Cohoes’ Nick Scott (285).
