Amsterdam man found dead in creek

AMSTERDAM – An Amsterdam man was found dead in the Chuctanunda Creek on Monday after witnesses said they saw him jump off a bridge, according to city police Det. Lt. Kurt Conroy.

Conroy said around 9 a.m. Monday, Antonio Mera, 50, jumped into the Chuctanunda Creek.

According to city Fire Chief Richard Liberti, Mera jumped off the bridge near Route 5 and the city Public Safety Building.

Conroy said Mera was dead when city police and fire officials found his body in the creek at 10:35 a.m.

Liberti said Mera drifted roughly 300 to 400 feet downstream from the initial point of entry.

“It took us a while to locate him,” Liberti said.

Conroy said while witnesses reported seeing Mera jump into the creek, officials cannot say if the death was a suicide or accident.

“I don’t think we will be able to determine that,” Conroy said.

According to Conroy, no further investigation is planned and an autopsy is being performed this afternoon on Mera.

Family members of Mera have been notified, Conroy said.

Conroy would not say if a motive or reason for Monday’s events were found, saying the department does not discuss matters of this nature unless it is a “high-profile” case.
