KeyBank to close branch in May

GLOVERSVILLE – The KeyBank on North Main Street will close its doors in May, officials with the business said.

“As customers continue to move toward electronic banking, instant access and ease of convenience of online and mobile banking, the banking industry as a whole is feeling its impact and working to give customers more ways to access their accounts,” said Joanne Smith, manager of the Gloversville branch. “Most customers are pleased with these innovations and the decision to consolidate the Gloversville branch with the Johnstown branch was made after a very lengthy and precise process.”

Key Bank spokeswoman Therese Myers said the KeyBank on Main Street in the city will close May 9 and is the only branch of the business doing so in Fulton, Montgomery and Hamilton counties.

“We use a variety of metrics to determine if we are going to consolidate a branch into another one,” Myers said. “We are always looking at those statistics to see where our customers want to bank and the reality is people are going into branches a lot less often these days.”

The actual branches are used less often today for everyday banking needs thanks to ATMs and online banking, she said, but they are still a resource for customers seeking loans or retirement advice where that face-to-face support is wanted.

KeyBank bought the city branch in 1962 and it has provided financial services to local residents for over 50 years, officials said.

“Change can be difficult for all that is involved, but the staff here at the Gloversville location will continue to serve our friends and neighbors with this transition during and after. Our focus has and will be to remain committed to our valued customers,” Smith said.

The three employees at the city branch have been offered positions at other KeyBank branches, officials said.

Myers said KeyBank customers will still be able to reach ATMs and branch offices in Johnstown and the two offices located in Amsterdam.
