Bed races part of fundraising event Saturday in Edinburg
EDINBURG – The beds will fly across the ice Saturday as competitors race for prizes while raising funds for the town emergency squad.
The Great Sacandaga Lake Annual Bed Race Championship will kick off at noon Saturday on the lake front of J&S Country Store, 930 South Shore Road.
The afternoon-long event will include hot-air balloon rides, live music and displays from artists.
“It is supposed to be a great day,” said Robert William, who owns the store and is sponsoring the event.
William said the event is an offshoot of outhouse races held in the area during the winter. He is expecting up to 15 three-person teams, who will race in a series of heats to determine who will get the grand prize of a trophy and $200.
The second-place team will get $100. Prizes also will be awarded to the best-dressed team.
The registration fee is $30 per group. Beds will be supplied, a news release said.
Races will begin at 1:30 p.m. Hot air balloon rides also will start at 1:30 p.m. offering attendees the chance to get a look at the area from high in the air. A bonfire will be set at 3 p.m., and local artists and businesses will have displays set up throughout the afternoon.
Sleigh riding and ice skating are also available, William said.
Local musician Vinnie Saj will play live music and DJ the event.
The Four Corners Diner and Fuller’s Corner Store in Edinburg also are sponsoring the event, whose proceeds will benefit the Edinburg Emergency Squad.
“All three of us are trying to get together and raise some money for [the squad],” William said.
